Moth Protection for Rugs

Moths are best combatted by frequently moving and handling your rug and exposing it regularly to light and air to keep the moths at bay. If you must put your antique rugs into storage, try to check on them regularly to ensure there is no moth damage. There are also certain chemical applications that will render the wool inedible to moths.

Getting Your Antique Rug Wet

There is no rule that says you cannot get your hand-knotted rug wet; after all, if you want to place your rug in an entry way, it will naturally encounter wet shoes. However, to prevent rot and other damage, try to keep damp shoes from being left on the rug for an extended period. If you have any accidents or spills, dry them as quickly as possible and reach out to the Knotty Rug Company for rug cleaning services as quickly as possible.

Vacuuming a Hand-Knotted Rug

You can absolutely vacuum your hand-knotted rug, but we recommend that you vacuum with the grain, called the “nap”, not against. Vacuuming against the nap presses dirt back into the rug.

The direction of the nap can easily be determined by running your hand across the pile from fringe to fringe. If the rug feels smooth, you are running your hand in the direction of the nap. If it feels rough, you are rubbing your hand against the nap. The pile of a rug naturally slants towards one end of the rug and has a noticeable impact on texture and color.

Never vacuum the fringe on your rug. Doing so can cause the fringe to tear and break. Sweeping the fringe with a broom gives the best results. Always vacuum with low-level suction using an empty chamber to minimize dust and dirt.

Rug Padding

Good quality rug padding protects your hand-knotted rug, especially in heavily trafficked areas. The best padding is a hair or fiber-filled pad with rubberized surfaces to keep the rug from moving or wrinkling. The life of a hand-knotted rug can be doubled with the use of a good quality pad.

Rotation

To avoid sun damage due to too much exposure, frequently rotate your rug from sunny areas to the other side of the room to equalize the effect of the sun. Avoid continuous exposure to bright, hot areas within your home as even indirect sunlight will cause damage to the dyed fabrics in oriental and Persian rugs. On exceptionally sunny days, use window shades, shutters, or heavy curtains to reduce sun damage to your antique rug.

Hanging

Before hanging carpets on the wall, you should be certain that the warp threads can withstand the strain. Never use nails or staples to hold the rug up. Use a strong poster holder to evenly distribute the weight of the hanging carpet.

Flattened or Crushed Pile

To restore the piles that are indented or crushed by the legs of furniture, brush the depressed area with a soft brush and faintly moisten the area with a spray bottle. Continue brushing the piles upright, but do not use too much force.

What's the Difference Between a Hand-Knotted Rug and a Hand-Woven Rug?

Simply put, hand-knotted rugs are carefully tied individually, knot-by-knot while hand-woven floor coverings are made in a flat weave. This means the more creative knottier rugs have a real 3-D appeal compared to their flatter woven counterparts.

What is a Hand-Tufted Rug?

A hand-tufted rug is a rug that’s made by hand with the help of a tufting gun. The gun weaves wool or yard strands through a canvas backing.

Are Hand-Knotted Rugs Worth the Price?

Yes!

Do you have any heirlooms from your family that have been passed down through the generations? Do you look at these pieces of family history with fondness and think about what you’ll want to pass down to your children? A hand-knotted rug is an investment for the future. Not only are hand-knotted rugs beautiful pieces of art that live in your home, but they are also family keepsakes that can be kept for decades with proper care.

Custom or Stock Rugs?

The Knotty Rug Company brings in new, one-of-a-kind stock from all over the world. All of our rugs are completely unique rugs made by hand.

Should I have my Rug Professionally Cleaned?

Unlike rugs you’ll find in online stores that can be thrown through the washing machine, hand-knotted rugs need dedicated care and cleaning to make sure they last. Commercial rugs are made with synthetic fibers so harsh detergents and the rough motion of the washing machine won’t cause them too much damage, but that also means they will only last a few years before you have to buy a new rug.

Hand-knotted rugs are most often made with wool, which is a natural fiber that needs care in order to last. However, these investments are worth the upkeep, and you only really need to worry about getting them professionally cleaned every 3-5 years depending on their location.

Can I Have a Hand-Knotted Rug if I Have Pets?

Yes! Because each knot is tied by hand, our rugs are durable and long-lasting, even against pet nails and traffic. If you do notice some wear and tear or experience an accident, the Knotty Rug can help repair your rug so that it continues to serve beauty in your home.
